Canyoning adventure in Greece

Gorgopotamos: the "nice" monster

Team athlete and avowed water lover Ines Walch was in her element again: Before the end of the year, she traveled to Greece together with her partner Klaus and Swiss friends to tackle the next gorge: Gorgopotamos. Gorgo=fast, potamos=river. She didn't only bring back unforgettable experiences, but also a report and awesome photos for our blog.

Canyoning adventure in Greece

For a second time I set out to Lamia with my partner Klaus. Despite the bad weather forecast we are optimistic. The canyoning backpack is packed – the plane ready. :) We are, too. We travel to Athens. From there, we try to get a bus in direction Lamia, where we are already awaited by Vasilis Messini – he is our host for the weekend. The magical journey to one of the most beautiful gorges begins. The next day we meet our Swiss friends. With a team of 6 people we get ready for the "big" day. It starts to rain on our day of arrival and it gets foggy – we are nervous. We are so many kilometres from home. Will we even be able to access the gorge? Or will there be too much water? We don't know yet.

The day of our adventure starts very early. After a strengthening breakfast at Vasilis', we start our day at 6 in the morning – for the next hour we are transported to the entrance of the gorge with a 4x4. The weather is dull, the sky grey and drab. We are excited. Another 15 minutes of descending, then we will finally know if the water levels will be fine. We are lucky :D ...and can enter. The gorge is over 1000 meters high and about 5 kilometres long. No signal, no emergency exits. We take our first steps in the impressive streambed – it's a long way to the first rappelling possibility... we rappelled... jumped – now we are in. Our eyes are shining. The gorge is so multi-faceted. You can rappel up to 90m, it's technical, there are many opportunities to slide or jump and it is definitely long and energy-sapping. Sometimes you are completely alone, it's like a little maze, and the rappelling passages are nothing for the faint-hearted. But inbetween there's enough space and time to dream. Rock as far as the eye reaches, sometimes you can't even see the sky. Despite the dull weather, the pools are just wonderful and we were totally amazed by the beautiful waterfalls.

We are so lucky to experience something so wonderful, or let's better say precious! At the highest point there's weak signal, so we called Vasilis. He is the one who will pick us up as soon as we're out again. We are getting more tired, but every bit of the journey brings you a bit further. Feelings of happiness make you forget all the exertion... another little washing machine, another pool and we are out. This "nice" monster ends in a very calm, nice streambed and then flows in direction of the village. As if nothing has ever happened here. Is it worth flying to Greece for a gorge? We can definitely answer this question with YES.

Many thanks go out to my partner Klaus Fankhauser, Alex Arnold for the pictures and the rest of the group, Alessia, Jeanne and Reggio. Thanks also to Vasilis Messini who opened the doors to his home for us and who made a beautiful fairytale weekend in his Hobbit houses possible. An unforgettable adventure. :D
